FAQ & User Guides

Everything you need to know about using Coin Flow

Quick Start Guide

1. Connect Your Bank Account

After signing in with Google, you'll be prompted to connect your first bank account:

  1. Click "Connect Bank Account" button
  2. Search for your bank in the Plaid Link window
  3. Enter your online banking credentials (secure and encrypted)
  4. Select which accounts to connect
  5. Wait for initial sync (60 days of transaction history)
Security: Your bank credentials are never stored. Plaid uses read-only access and bank-level encryption.

2. Organize with Categories

Transactions are automatically categorized, but you can customize:

  1. Go to Categories page
  2. Review default categories (Food, Transportation, etc.)
  3. Create custom categories with subcategories
  4. Assign colors and icons for easy identification
  5. Use tags for additional organization (e.g., "Tax Deductible", "Business")
Tip: Coin Flow remembers how you categorize each merchant, so the more you correct, the less there is to correct.

3. Create Your First Budget

Set spending limits and track your progress:

  1. Navigate to Budgets page
  2. Click "Create New Budget" for current month
  3. Set budget amounts for each category
  4. Watch real-time progress as transactions sync
  5. Copy to next month or adjust as needed
Note: Budget tracking shows actual vs. planned spending with visual indicators.

4. Analyze Your Spending

Gain insights with powerful analytics:

  1. Visit Trends page for visualizations
  2. Filter by date range, category, or tags
  3. View spending breakdowns by category, tag, or time
  4. Export data to CSV for detailed analysis
  5. Identify patterns and adjust budgets accordingly

Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

Yes — we're in free beta, with no hidden costs and no credit card. There isn't even a way to pay us yet. Access starts as a 30-day trial with every feature switched on; if you'd like longer, just ask, and during beta we'll say yes.

Right now, we don't — Coin Flow costs us money to run. Every bank account you connect carries a monthly fee from our bank-data provider, so we will most likely charge for live bank sync eventually. We'd rather say that plainly than promise a free tier we might not be able to keep.

What we will commit to: your data is never held hostage. If you don't pay, the app goes read-only instead of locking you out — you keep reading and exporting everything you ever put in, at no cost, for as long as you want it.

Security & Privacy

Absolutely. We use Plaid, the industry-leading banking API trusted by Venmo, Robinhood, and thousands of apps. Your credentials are encrypted and never stored on our servers. We only have read-only access - we cannot move money or make changes to your accounts.

No. We only have read-only access to your transaction history and account balances. We cannot initiate transfers, make payments, or modify your accounts in any way.

Never. Your financial data is private and belongs to you. We do not sell, share, or monetize your personal information. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Features & Usage

Currently, you can manually sync transactions at any time by clicking the "Sync" button. We pull the latest transactions from your bank through Plaid. Most transactions appear within 1-4 hours of being made, depending on your bank.

Yes! Use the split transaction feature to divide a single transaction across multiple categories. For example, split a Target purchase into "Groceries" and "Household Items". Click the split icon next to any transaction.

It's rule-based, not AI. When you categorize a transaction, Coin Flow saves the merchant and the category you chose. New transactions are then matched against those saved pairs — first on merchant name, then on the transaction description — and filed automatically. If a merchant has no saved pair yet, it uses whichever category you've most often given that merchant before.

It only ever learns from your choices; nothing is shared between accounts, and your transactions are never sent to a third-party model. You can always override a categorization, and doing so updates the rule.

Yes — up to 10 accounts and credit cards, from as many different institutions as you like. All transactions are aggregated in one place for comprehensive financial tracking.

Troubleshooting

  1. Verify your bank credentials are correct
  2. Check if your bank requires multi-factor authentication
  3. Try again in a few minutes (temporary bank outages can occur)
  4. Some banks require you to enable third-party access in your online banking settings
  5. If the issue persists, your bank may not be supported yet through Plaid

Initial sync imports the last 60 days of transactions. Pending transactions may not appear immediately. Click "Sync" to get the latest data. If transactions are still missing, check if they're visible in your online banking - Plaid can only access what your bank makes available.

Yes. You can export everything as CSV at any time, from inside the app.

Yes, from Settings → Delete account. You'll be asked to type your email address to confirm.

Deletion waits 14 days before it happens. Your account keeps working normally during that window and you can cancel at any point from the banner shown on every page. After that everything is permanently removed: transactions, budgets, categories, tags, Bitcoin wallets, and your bank connections at Plaid. Prefer we did it for you?
